Back to the Future: Developing & Reusing the Web
In the Birch Room from 11:00 until 12:00
Come with me on a trip to the past: to a day when all we had was the basic HTTP protocol. We'll reminisce about HTTP methods, URIs, and HTTP headers. We've all relied on HTTP in one way for or another, now let's find out how we can make it work to our advantage, in a very simple, easy-to-use way. This session goes into detail about what REST is, how to model and subsequently write RESTful web services, and how to consume them in various languages (focus on and Ruby/Ruby on Rails). Together, we'll go Back to the Future.
Sarah Dutkiewicz
Behold the Power of Python
In the Birch Room from 3:00 until 4:00
In this presentation, we'll explore what python is, where its strong points are, where it's being used, and how to get into using it. We will also explore where python is being used in the FOSS realm. There are no snakes on this plane, but there may be references to Monty Python, where this language gets its name.

How a Real World Business Profits from FOSS
In the Oak Room from 1:00 until 1:30
We're all aware that software is supposed to make a business more efficient. Although this is the goal, it is not always the outcome. Business owners are often confronted with the time wasting and costly issues that proprietary lock ins create. You will learn how one business dealt with this problem and resolved it through the use of Free and Open Source Software.
Adam Siemienski
How to Bring FOSS to the Mainstream
In the Maple Room from 1:00 until 1:30
Free and Open Source Software is more popular today than ever. So why then is this movement so slow for mainstream adoption? This presentation will explore one business owner's view on a few shortcomings that need addressed in order to attract more business users. Not only do advocates of proprietary software need an understanding of the FOSS model, but also how they can accomplish their necessary tasks with FOSS. This presentation shows the need for side-by-side training methods from the FOSS community in order to gain market share.
Gregory Boehnlein

Looking for Gravity Defying Fastballs, Sore Shoulders and Spitballs with Open Source Software
In the Maple Room from 3:00 until 4:00
Software without a purpose has little value if it can't be used for something the people want. Using R, Open Source databases, TCL, Python, GNUPlot, and GNU FORTRAN, I'll demonstrate how that software can be used to research: Can a baseball defy gravity? Do pitches act differently at each stadium? Is a pitcher injured? Are current pitchers throwing spitballs and why they should!

Puppy Linux, Who let the Dawgs Out?
In the Birch Room from 1:31 until 2:00
In this presentation you will discover just how friendly an experience Free and Open Source Software can be. Puppy Linux is a playful operating system that requires no commitment. Just by popping a CD in your computer you can have Puppy Linux and all of its programs up and running in a matter of a couple of minutes. Puppy does not install anything to the hard drive, so your computer and files are untouched. Thus a simple reboot is all that is needed to return your computer back to normal. Despite its small size, Puppy is amazingly robust. So don't let it's name fool you and don't let yourself be left in the dog house by missing this talk.
